The Center for Lao Studies invites you to participate in our growth and development by becoming a member. At the Saman or Basic Level, you will have access to the current issue of our peer-reviewed academic journal, the Journal of Lao Studies, which is published twice a year. Your tax-deductible contribution (for U.S. residents) will assist CLS in achieving its goals, objectives, and programs.


Annual Membership categories include:

$20 – Ideal for Students. Access to the Journal of Lao Studies--our peer-reviewed academic journal.

Thong (Bronze) Level

$35 – Ideal for Seniors (age 65 and over). Basic level benefits as well as your name listed on CLS supporter webpage.

$50 – Ideal for Individuals. Basic and Bronze level benefits and 5% discount to CLS events & activities.

Kham (Gold) Level

$100-$249 – All Saman level benefits and 15% discount on select CLS events and activities.

At the Center for Lao Studies (CLS), one of our main objectives is to promote and preserve the languages and cultures of the peoples of Laos. To this end, CLS offers professional Lao-English, English-Lao document translation services. Whether you have an official or legal document, or audio/visual projects to be translated, CLS can meet your needs. We use highly trained translators and services to ensure that the integrity of your document, its meaning, and the Lao language stays intact.

TRANSLATION FEES

Translation fees are competitive, calculated on a per-project basis and vary according to complexity of the document, length of text, required turnaround time, file format and layout (see sample prices below).

Specifically, prices are based on these factors:

  • Number of source words (words from the language being translated from)
  • Complexity of the subject matter (i.e. legal contracts will be more expensive than business letters)
  • Complexity of Lao language (vs. romance languages) and scarcity of quality linguistic resources in Lao
  • Amount of time required to complete the assignment
  • Translation for films/videos, song lyrics, or oral interviews will be priced separately

Lao TLC - Traditions, Language & Cultures

One of our objectives at the Center for Lao Studies (CLS) is to promote and preserve the languages and cultures of the indigenous peoples of Laos. To accomplish this, CLS has created “Lao TLC” – Lao Traditions, Language & Cultures – a new program that increases access to Lao arts and culture for both the Lao community and general public. Lao classical dance, the playing of musical instruments, and knowledge of the Lao language are quickly disappearing as the older Lao generation, who largely retains this knowledge, are passing on.
